In 2007 DCS officially opened its new social service/administrative center in the heart of Point Breeze, a journey 4 years in the making. A year later the Board of Directors named the facility in honor of Mamie Nichols, a champion of Point Breeze and neighborhood greening. Mamie started her professional social work career at Dixon House.
The center brings in free valuable resources to community residents that include:
Green Jobs Training Initiaitve provides an intense job readiness program for qualified adults to gain employment in the clean energy sector. This is a collaborative effort involving the Philadelphia Workforce Investment Board, the Federation of Neighborhood Centers and the Sustainable Business Network.
The center is home to a music studio where young people have the opportunity to produce their own CDs and learn about industry careers in music and performing arts. An adjacent lot has been transformed into a vegetable garden tended by local teenagers in partnership with the Federation of Neighborhood Centers' Teens4 Good project.
