Early Childhood Centers

Mission

The mission of Dixon Learning Academy and Western Learning Center is to prepare children to succeed in school.

Credentials

Both centers are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), indicating that our centers have met rigorous quality standards for education, health and safety.  Only 10 percent of all daycare centers in the greater Philadelphia area are accredited.

Both centers also have four stars, the highest rating from Keystone Stars, a state initiative to promote the quality of early learning programs.

The centers collaborate with the School District of Philadelphia, serving as Pre-K Counts sites,  a state initiative to ensure that children are prepared to succeed at school.

Philosophy of Education

Our centers provide an environment that promotes self-worth, self-control and self-respect.  We offer age-appropriate activities and instruction using the evidenced-based Creative Curriculum to enhance each child's creative, social, physical, emotional and cognitive development.  A high adult-child ratio makes it possible for children to learn and grow at their own pace.  We value our relationships with parents and encourage them to attend parent/teacher meetings, to volunteer at events and in the classroom.

Western Learning Center

The center derives its name from the Western Soup Society, a shelter for needy families in 1837.  In 1970 the facility was fully renovated for daycare and in 1978 the center expanded, adding six new classrooms and an enclosed play yard.  Since then the center has consistently upgraded its physical facilities to meet stringent state and city building codes as well as its educational program and staff training.  Western is conveniently located to the Broad Street subway, the 40 and 2 bus routes.  The center serves:

  • Young and Older Toddlers (13 months to 35 months)
  • Pre-School Children (3 years to 5 years)
  • School-Aged program (6 years to 12 years old) including a full-day summer camp.
